Lenovo’s Yoga lineup is one of the best 2-in-1 laptops with a 360-degree hinge design. The company was one of the first to adopt this form factor and still seems to be going strong

The company recently launched the Yoga 9i laptop in India with a sleek, premium design coupled with high performance. In addition, the laptop also has some extra features and best-in-class features that are really hard to find in Windows machines.

However, not everything is as expected or the company claims to be. For example, the touchpad, Lenovo calls it Glass Sense touchpad, it’s hit or slide type. The same is true of the fingerprint scanner.

So, after almost a month of using the laptop, here we are answering an important question: should you spend your hard earned money on the Lenovo Yoga 9i or not? Let’s find out together.

Design has always been at the forefront of the Yoga series laptops. Lenovo’s 360-degree hinge has been around for years, and it’s improved with each generation, and that’s exactly the case with the Yoga 9i.

The hinge mechanism is smooth and firm. The screen doesn’t wobble at all, as is the case with other 2-in-1 laptops. Another important thing to note here is that the lid can be opened with one hand without touching the base of the laptop, again a rarity for a laptop of this design.

The hinge here is not an ordinary hinge. What we mean by that is the hinge also covers the front speakers along with a few others placed on the bottom side of the base. We will talk about the speakers later in our review.

Now, let’s talk about the lid and its faux leather finish. The laptop’s lid is covered with a soft leather material that is soft to the touch which also provides a good grip when held. Winter is here and a metal laptop feels cold to the touch, which thankfully isn’t.

Next is the overall design. Now, most parts of a laptop are either glass or metal. The keyboard’s palm rest area is a single pane of glass, and the back of the laptop is metal.

Both feel solid and well built. But there is a problem here. The touchpad unit and palm rest area including the fingerprint scanner are completely flat with a body with paper-thin borders. This makes it hard to tell when your finger has left the trackpad area and you’re dragging your fingers across the palm rest. The same situation is with the fingerprint scanner that requires serious concentration while unlocking the laptop.

Port selection here is good. It has two USB Type-C ports on the left side, one USB Type-A port and a headphone jack. There is nothing on the right side of the machine. One thing to note here is that the laptop has a dedicated slot to hold the stylus.

A few quirks aside, it’s a solid machine built with precision and character.

The Features of Yoga 9i 14-inch 4K IPS LCD touchscreen with Dolby Vision and HDR support. The bezels are slim, the top has an inverted notch design to accommodate the webcam along with a manual privacy shutter for added privacy.

Going back to the screen, the display is really good, the colors are accurate and sharp. Brightness levels and viewing angles are also good. In fact, the screen can be bright enough to be easily seen even in direct sunlight.

Watching movies, playing games is a breeze on this laptop, especially if you have some Dolby Vision content to throw at it.

It’s a touch panel and the touch response is good and accurate. We used the stylus to edit photos, take notes, mark up anything on the screen, etc.

Lenovo Yoga 9i is equipped with 11th generation Intel Core i7 1185G7 processor combined with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD. The laptop also has integrated Vehicle graphics. On paper, the spec sheet is on par with other laptops in its class.

It’s also based on Intel’s Evo platform that ensures the best possible performance from any machine.

The laptop offers smooth performance without any noticeable lag, lag or stutter. This is a powerful machine for most everyday office work and casual gaming.

We tested the laptop while browsing about 25 tabs on Google Chrome, running Adobe Photoshop for photo editing and Premiere Pro for video. The laptop manages to handle browsing and photo editing with flying colors. While editing video, the only time we felt the need for more horsepower was when editing a heavy 4K video.

The keyboard here is really good, it has enough space between the keys and the key travel is comfortable. The keys are strong and give good feedback when pressed. It also has a two-step backlight with a good level of brightness.

We wish we could say the same for the touchpad. Now, the idea of using Apple’s force sensing in the trackpad is really cool, but the implementation could be better. The vibration motor feels inconsistent and it is also very responsive, even the sensitivity level is set to the lowest. Palm decline is also not great here. We wish Lenovo should provide a slightly better optimization for the touchpad which has a lot of potential to be one of the best on a Windows laptop.

As for the speakers, there’s one thing we have to say, it’s probably the best speaker setup on a Windows laptop. The onboard Dolby Atmos combined with the quad-speaker setup provides really good audio output. It’s really loud and the surround sound level is surprisingly good too. We’ve seen a few movies here and the speakers never let us down.

The battery
The laptop offers about 6-7 hours of battery life with brightness set to 75% and WIFI turn on all the time. In addition, the laptop using Type-C charging can charge the laptop in about 2 hours.

The Lenovo Yoga 9i is one of the most premium laptops on the market with a premium design and solid build quality. But does it justify its hefty price tag of Rs 1,74,990? Well, the answer here depends on what you are looking for from a laptop.

The laptop can handle most everyday tasks including light gaming and the combination of screen and speakers takes multimedia viewing to the next level. It has a solid build quality with a 360-degree hinge, it also offers flexibility in how or for what you want to use the laptop.

So if you are looking for a premium laptop that not only has a good face but also performs well and you don’t want heavy gaming and most importantly, if you have such a budget, then the Yoga 9i won’t let you down.
