Michael Page wants to beat Canelo Alvarez

Leon Edwards was thwarted by UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman being kicked out Canelo Alvarez.

Edwards is set to be the next challenger to Usman’s title, with the UFC targeting International week of July as a matchday. Usman is currently recovering from arm surgery but of course must protect the belt in the summer.

The UFC’s first-place champion recently stunned people by calling boxing star Alvarez into a cross-match. Usman is confident he can become the first boxer to knock out Alvarez, despite having no professional boxing fights under the belt.

Before ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ tries to fight Alvarez, he needs to get past his old nemesis Edwards first. ‘Rocky’ is trying very hard to have a chance to end Usman’s 20-fight unbeaten streak and become the second British UFC champion in history.

“I don’t know where he is,” Edwards said of Usman. “He’s going to beat Canelo anyway and there’s no way he’s going to beat me. I saw something on the day he said he was going to go out to wrestle the whole game, he had I can do what he wants I’m ready to go.

“It’s payday or he’s trying to try his hand at something, one or the other. It’s not a long career, so if you can get paid, pay. I’ll be home champion when he leaves, so I’ll take his belt off so he can go and do what he wants to do.”

Alvarez dismissed Usman’s call by saying that the UFC champion was just looking for a day’s pay to fight him. Usman proposed a battle with Alvarez in September, but the Mexican is expected to do his three-part fight with Gennady Golovkin that month.

Usman and Edwards are no strangers to each other, having met at a Fight Night event in 2015 during the early stages of their UFC careers. Usman won that night, but Edwards thinks both fighters have evolved a lot since then and a rematch would play out very differently.

“He’s improved the payload, but so have I,” added Edwards. “When I played against him, I was 22 years old, now I’m 30. I learned a lot during that time but so did he. It will be a completely different fight than it was back then, so we have to see it as a new war.

Edwards admits it will “make sense” to him in bringing the UFC title back to the UK, something that hasn’t been done since Michael Bisping became the first UFC fighter to do so when he He won the middleweight belt in 2016.
