Leonardo DiCaprio made a donation to support humanitarian causes in Ukraine

As a longtime UN peace ambassador, it makes sense that Leonardo DiCaprio will be interested in the plight of the more than 1 million refugees who have fled Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion. Vanity Fair can confirm that DiCaprio has donated to Organization CARE, International Rescue Committee, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Save children to support humanitarian aid to Ukraine and its people.

Reports that the actor donated $ 10 million to a military campaign or to the Visegrad Foundation are untrue. A spokesman for the Visegrad Foundation told VF that they plan to donate 1 million euros to the relief effort, but their funds have been allocated by the prime ministers of Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic during a Wednesday meeting in London.

A source close to DiCaprio says that he has no family ties to the country, but that he sided with Ukraine. “He’s been keeping an eye on everything that’s going on and wants to support Ukraine as best he can,” the source said. “He will continue to support humanitarian groups on the ground that help the people of Ukraine.”

DiCaprio was appointed as one of the United Nations ambassadors for peace in 2014, when he was commended by the then Secretary General. Ban Ki-moon for his contributions to the fight against climate change. “I feel a moral obligation to speak out at this pivotal time in human history,” DiCaprio said at the time. “It was a moment for action. How we respond to the climate crisis in the coming years will likely determine the fate of humanity and our planet.”
