A patient approach could yield an early Christmas gift to Amathuba’s relationships as she bids to stake her Magic Millions titles at Randwick.
The mare was scratched after races in Sydney and Brisbane last weekend due to an awkward draw, but co-trainer Will Freedman said she needed to line up on Saturday to give herself every chance to book. tickets to the Gold Coast.
In a significant boost, the four-year-old advanced to the third gate for Grainshaker’s Australian Vodka Handicap (1200m) on Saturday and will be ridden by Kerrin Mcevoy.
Freedman said: “We were planning to run (last Saturday) but she had a wide run in Sydney.
“Then we had an extensive interview in Queensland and it wasn’t really our first interest so we thought, ‘is it worth sending her over?’
“We’ve decided to have her run the standard 78 1200 meters for track and field at Randwick (this week).”
Amathuba came in third after Starboreta and Pretty Wild first debuted at Labour The meeting then missed a place compared to the men last time out.
She returned to the mares and mares on Saturday and has thrived between runs, and while both Starboreta and Pretty Wild have once again become her rivals, both all had difficult draws at hurdles 11 and 14, respectively.
“She’s flying at the moment,” Freedman said.
“She qualifies for the Magic Millions race with her number of owners, so if we can get her there that’s the goal.”
