Maharashtra first awards Kobad book, then scraps award panel, prize | India News


MUMBAI: Less than a week after the announcement of the literary award for the Marathi translation of the former Maoist leader Kobad Ghandy, ‘Freedom is Broken’, the state government on Monday reversed the decision and rescinded the award’s oversight committee.
State Marathi language department has informed about Late Yashwantrao Chavan State Literature Prize 2021 on 6 December for Anagha Lele for Marathi translation published by Lokwangmay Gruha.
Pushing back on the decision in Government Resolution (GR), the state also announced the dissolution of the award oversight committee for administrative reasons. It also sought a report from the secretary of the Maharashtra State Literature and Culture Commission on the decision to award the book.
“The State Government Marathi Language Department presents the award in the name of the late Yashwantrao Chavan. For these state literary awards, in-state and out-of-state entries in various categories are considered… For 2021, of the entries received, a review committee Thorough has been established to select the winners. The award was announced on December 6. Now the supervisory committee… has been cancelled. Likewise, the award…for the Marathi translation of the book, ‘Freedom Broken: Memoir in Prison’ has been cancelled,” GR said. The state’s Marathi language department is headed by Minister Deepak Kesarkar, who belongs to the Shinde faction of Shiv Sena.
Officials said 35 categories were awarded. Thirty-three awardees have been announced and Gandhithe book has been selected for the author/translation for ‘Tarktirth Laxmanshasatri Joshi Puraskar’ with a bonus amount of Rs 1 lakh. Immediately after the award was announced, there were reactions on social media with critics urging the government to rescind the decision.
In a statement to TOI, Gandhi said lies were spreading about him on social media. “The English version of the best-selling book on Amazon since its release in March 2021. . . ”
Kobad was a politburo member of the CPI (Maoist) banned extremist group before he was suspended last year for his “anti-party” activities and abandonment of Maoist ideology. He was arrested in 2009 on charges of Naxal and spent a decade in prison before being released on bail in 2019.
