“No, thanks!”

That’s how most of the public reacts when CNBC’s National Economic Survey asked whether President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump should run for president again.

The survey found that 61% of the public think Trump should not run for president, compared with 30% who believe he should. And 70% said Biden should not run for a second term with only 19% in favor of running.

A significant number of each politician’s party doesn’t want their name on the ballot, including 37% of Republicans who don’t want Trump to run, along with 61% of independents and 88% of Democrats. .

As for Biden, 57% of Democrats think he should not run in 2024, along with 66% of independents and 86% of Republicans.

CNBC’s Democratic and Republican pollsters both believe that Democrats will likely support Biden if he is the candidate and Republicans will back Trump. In the primaries, each candidate will have a significant level of support that could allow them to win the nod of their party, especially against a large number of competitors that will split the vote. elected.

However, both pollsters pointed to major opposition from within each party and said neither Trump nor Biden were off to a good start. While Trump has announced his candidacy, President Biden has yet to officially do so.

The nationwide poll of 801 Americans was conducted from November 26 to 30. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.5%.

The survey found that 47 percent of those who think Biden shouldn’t run cite age as the main reason, including 61 percent of Democrats who don’t want him on the ballot and 66 percent of seniors. In contrast, only 43% of the 18-49 demographic cite age as the main reason. Biden turned 80 last month.

Just 8% say age is the main reason they don’t support another run for Trump, who is 76 years old.

Biden approval ratings slide

Biden has problems other than age. Despite the Democrats’ stronger-than-expected performance in the congressional elections and several legislative victories, overall support for Biden has dropped to 41% from 46% in the poll. October, with his disapproval rate increasing from 50% to 54%. The President’s economic approval rating dropped from 40% to 38% and disapproval rose one point to 57%.

Only 20% of the public think the Biden administration’s efforts to reduce inflation are helping, down 5 points from October; 28% believe they are hurting, down 2 points and 49% think they don’t make much of a difference, up 7 points.

The survey showed many negative views on the economy and outlook with only 14% saying the economy was good or excellent, the lowest level since 2013.

When it comes to the top priorities of Congress, Americans are unusually united: they want lawmakers to address inflation. 87% of the public say it should be the #1 job and top choice for both parties and for independents.

Other issues show a more traditional split: reducing deficits and spending is the second overall choice for both the public, Republicans and independents. But only 47% of Democrats think it should be a priority for Congress, compared with 84% of Republicans.

Protecting abortion rights nationally is the second-highest priority for Democrats. It was chosen by 72% of Democrats but by only 39% of independents and 17% of Republicans. And 68% of Republicans say investigating the Biden administration should be a priority, compared with 38% of independents and 12% of Democrats.

Immigration and border security rank high for Republicans, not Democrats. And Democrats strongly support Congress providing aid to Ukraine, a low priority for Republicans.
