Matrix Resurrections meta story challenges Jurassic World and its nostalgic sequels

Matrix Recovery is a reboot without damaging the hardware. One actually reboot, in some ways. The first word “reboot” has its origin in “pull yourself up with a one-man launch campaign”. Before it meant individualism, the phrase was thought to imply an impossible task. Early computers, room-sized devices operated by endless punch cards, felt like an impossible task for the people who operated them, so booting up they become “boots”. Reboot means the impossible mission has to start from the beginning, like putting back Matrix in 2021.

In the hands of Lana Wachowski, Matrix Recovery is a movie about other movies. On the surface, this makes sense. It’s a sequel, but Revival not about Matrix in the same way Revolution talk about Reloaded. It pays lip service to the plots of those movies, but is not invested in continuing their story. Instead, it mainly wanted to comment on how Matrix changed the world and how the world changed Matrix.

Although they seem to have an age difference, the original Jurassic Park and Matrix just six years apart, both were technological wonders when they came out, and both spawned two sequels. The message is clear: every attempt to challenge Jurassic Park like a franchise will fail, because there’s only one Jurassic Park.

Revival There is no such easy answer. Instead of concocting in the original premise, like Jurassic World no, the movie is plagued by it. The metaphorical Kool-Aid Man described in the IGN review haunts Thomas Anderson every day. Instead of a “desperate attempt” to cover up what Revival related to Matrix, Wachowski seems eager to engage with the topic.

Matrix Recovery inherently not better Jurassic World because it is meta. It’s better because it has more to say than “remember how fun old movies were?”

After all, no one feels surprised after watching Jurassic Park. Much of it was made up of the romance of Revival, but its core point involves theft: Neo must steal Trinity from The Matrix. But instead of the guns and infinity keys and MacGuffins of the other movies, Neo must convince Trinity to use her free will to leave her Chad-filled life as Tiffany. She must want a life beyond what she knows. So it makes sense that instead of a total control bureaucracy, Wachowski (and David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon, co-authors) now look at emotional manipulation. Gone are the Agents in Black, replaced by tieless bosses and an Analyst who refused to use the word “crazy”.

As Emily VanDerWerff notes in Vox, Analyst “doesn’t allow [Neo and Trinity] even closing death. He revives them and forces them back into the roles he likes best: the underpowered drone, forever longing to be together but never connecting.” While this may seem meta to some, it can also be seen as a serious storyteller trying to get their story back in a world where stories have come to be cheap.

Another underrated factor in Revival are groundbreaking special effects. Once upon a time, Matrix film sets the tone of what is visually possible in a Hollywood movie. “We went from eliminating the seemingly impossible, to the impossibility of creating a surprise,” said John Gaeta, a visual effects designer on the original trilogy who worked on the film.o in Revival Talk to The Wall Street Journal.

But now, in a world saturated with her CGI revolution, Lana Wachowski’s big stop is Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss jumping out. 43-storey building. Revival cut them down continuously, watching their faces like jumping into the sky, away from endless discussions and manipulations. They fall together, and then they fly. Nothing can match that fact.
