Rob Blacker has options to start Tigertiger campaign at Melbourne Cup

Mornington coach Rob Blacker says his Tigertiger stay will be ready to run on Melbourne Cup Day.

Options are Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 1 or the race for other occupants, The Macca’s Run, a 96 over 2800m Benchmark race.

Tigertiger kicks off its Cup campaign this weekend with Blacker turning seven for Benalla Cup (2046m) on Friday, Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night and List RM Ansett Classic (2400m) at Mornington on Saturday.

Blacker is backing one of the second picks, one where the track isn’t too wet and the race is easier.

Tigertiger has not raced since finishing last on the very heavy track in the Sydney Cup in April.

He has had a long, seven-month campaign, going from first win to first place success in the Bagot Handicap (2800m) in Flemington, then second in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup in March.

“Last time he had a great preparation, but his previous preparation, he didn’t race because we did a lot of work to get him settled,” Blacker said.

“I tried to make him a bit sharper because of the fact if you want a crack at the Cup he has to find three or four lengths, at least.”

Blacker had a plan for the Cup and had a backup plan if Tigertiger didn’t play.

“The plan is Friday or Saturday night, choose the gentlest option I can, then Herbert Power Staking (at Caulfield) and then to Geelong Cup or Moonee Valley Cup‘ said Blacker.

“He came in first at the weekend, but if he happens to win or run a really good race, we can skip the Herbert Power and go straight to the Moonee Valley or the Geelong Cup.

“But we also have the Sandown Cup, the Bagot, the Adelaide Cup at the end of all of this if he doesn’t succeed, so the idea of less running is more trying to get him a bit more explosive. “

Blacker is looking forward to becoming more competitive Melbourne Spring Festival and there’s three-year-old Skyphios heading to Team 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) on October 29.

Skyphios gets to attend Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) at The Valley on Friday night, but after working at that track on Monday and having a pretty good post-hit gallop, he is likely to drop. through the race.

Blacker is planning to start the first Skyphios in Team 1 Caulfield Guineas on 8 October and then to Group 2 Binh (2040m) in Moonee Valley two weeks later and into the Derby.
