Movie Costumer Ruth E Carter Is Black History & Future

As an industry veteran, Carter has experienced firsthand how costume design has evolved over time. From her early years with Spike Lee to date, she has mastered the skill of sourcing items for a specific time period. One skill Carter is still pursuing is research – knowing what people are wearing, what they are like, and what is going on in the world at the time. “I really put my focus on the people and the culture,” explains Carter. “We went through a number of epochs in Malcolm X, and further back, such as in the 1920s, became more difficult to cultivate as products from that time became increasingly scarce. However, in films like the life story of Tina Turner and To 2 Americas, you saw more of Afro-futurism through the lens of what Negroes were doing at the time. In the 70s, the blaxploitation mining era looked different from the hippy era.”
