The Sunday Roads initiative will block traffic on some roads for a few hours so people can move freely and do recreational activities.
Mumbai Police will make its road debut on Sunday 27th March from 6am to 10am on Marine Drive, Bandra, Goregaon, DN Nagar, Mulund, Vikhroli routes. These roads will be partially or completely closed. Residents can do recreational activities on these roads such as yoga, skating, cycling and other cultural games, officials announced. This initiative is being taken to help reduce vehicular pollution and also promote pollution free commuter routes.
Portions of the street that will be used are Dorabhai Tata Road Nariman Point in Marine Drive, Carter Road in Bandra, Mind Space Back Road in Goregaon, Lokhandwala Marg in DN Nagar, Tansa Pipeline in Mulund and Eastern Express Highway and Vikhroli Bridge in Vikhroli. The Sunday Street initiative will be held every Sunday, officials added.
This initiative is the brainchild of Sanjay Pandey, Commissioner of Police. Rajvardhan Sinha, Joint Commissioner, Mumbai Traffic Police, said the team had identified 13 patches, including those at Marine Drive, Bandra Bandstand, Oshiwara, Borivli and Mulund, among others. . Tourism and Environment Minister Maharashtra Aaditya Thackeray welcomed the initiative and said, “Mumbai is improving its actions on traffic and traffic laws, khataras and some key citizen issues. Calling on all Mumbaikars to come forward and support this initiative! “
