If A Very Fine Red can repeat her first attempt from the last, coach Mark Newnham hopes she will be close to starting her latest campaign with a win.
The talented mare continued with a third place ahead of candidate Everest Mazu in Fireball Quality (1100m) in March and found a much lighter task in the 78 Irresistible Pools & Spas Handicap benchmark on Saturday in the same itinerary at Rosehill.
“I want to see her win. She’s pretty forward, so she’ll run well and she handles soft ground.”
A Very Fine Red is yet to miss third place in her last three runs and Newnham was elated after her two trials, especially her fourth with steady friend Joyful Fortune on last month.
Eduardo finished second in the heat and Joyful Fortune then showed up and beat his opponents by more than four lengths at Flemington on Sunday.
“She is in good form. Her first test proved a powerful test against Joyful Fortune and Eduardo and she was on the right track for them,” said Newnham.
“She’s had another trial since then and a bit of work, so she won’t be far away.”
Newnham is keen to get the second man back in the race but will consider taking her around from an extensive draw on Saturday.
“I’ll take a closer look at that race and see,” Newnham said.
“She’s a pretty good person and has a few races in the spring, I wouldn’t mind bringing her in, we just have to wait and see where we start.”
