Official: Canada likely to drop vaccine requirement to enter

TORONTO – Canada will likely drop its vaccine requirement for people entering Canada by the end of September, an official familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Canada, like the United States, requires everyone to be vaccinated upon entering the country. It remains unclear whether the US will make a similar move on September 30.

The official said that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau needs to give a final indication of this but the government will likely waive the requirement as well as end random COVID-19 testing at airports. Filling out information in the uncommon ArriveCan app will also no longer be required.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

Unvaccinated professional athletes such as major league baseball players will be allowed to play in Toronto in the knockout stages if the Blue Jays do after the season. They are not currently allowed to cross the border into Canada.

When new populist Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre was announced as party leader in Ottawa this month, the biggest cheer he received from supporters was when he said he would scrap the application. Use ArriveCan.
