Orange alert in parts of Andhra Pradesh as Cyclone Mandous set to make landfall | Visakhapatnam News


VISAKHAPATNAM: Tornado Mandous (pronounced Man-Dous) is located 390km east-southeast of Karaikal and about 480km southeast of Chennai, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.
The tornado capable of landing between Puducherry and Sriharikota.
Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rain is likely in some parts of Nellore, Tirupati, Annamayya and Chittoor districts on Friday, heavy rain in isolated places in Prakasam, Kadapa, Anantapur and Sathya Sai and possible light to moderate rain in many parts of the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) and Rayalaseema region.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for four districts in Andhra Pradesh, which shows that authorities need to stay alert to take action.
IMD-Amaravati director Stella S said the system would most likely move in a west-northwest direction and strengthen into a severe cyclone by Thursday night. It will maintain the intensity of a Severe Cyclone through early Friday morning and then weaken to a cyclone on Friday. It is very likely to pass through northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and the adjacent southern Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Sriharikota, around Mahabalipuram with maximum sustained wind speeds of 65-75 km/h, gusts up to 85 km/h around midnight on Friday.
Weather forecasters said the tornado was not a major hurricane but could still cause significant impacts in parts of SCAP and Rayalaseema.
The IMD also predicts that light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur in most areas of light to moderate rainfall in SCAP and Rayalaseema and some parts of northern coastal Andhra Pradesh. Heavy rain is likely in parts of Annamayya, Chittoor, Sathya Sai and Anantapur districts on Saturday. IMD warns fishermen not to venture out into the sea until Sunday
YS Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy directed the Collectors of different districts to be on alert for the cyclone cyclone in the Bay of Bengal.
The minister reviewed the situation of the storm in the Bay of Bengal on Thursday. He said that adequate precautions should be taken by authorities considering the storm’s impact over time.
Officials have informed the premier that due to the impact of the storm, rain is forecast in Nellore, Tirupati, Chittoor and other counties. In return, he asked the officials of the agriculture ministry to raise awareness of the precautions to take among farmers and help them.
