In a catchy commercial that marks a new partnership between British skating company Palace and iconic American brand Calvin Klein, actor Willem Dafoe, playing a New York taxi driver, is sitting in driver’s seat. He turned to professional skater Shawn Powers to ask, “Where are we going?”
“Take me to Tompkins.”
With a grin, Dafoe — probably has personality, though he used to live around—Indicated they were driving to TF, the black “Practice Ground” airport in East Village’s Tompkins Square Park, where skaters have congregated for decades. And so, fashion’s latest mega-collab is here.
Dafoe and Powers are just two members of the motley team celebrating the Calvin Klein x Palace collection. Others include: Hollywood legend Dame Joan Collins (…!), Pet Shop Boys, Palace skaters Lucien Clarke and Charlie Birch, rapper Unknown T, and models Adwoa Aboah, Precious Lee , and Lourdes “Lola” Leon. If that sounds like a fun mash-up of Yankees and Brits, that’s on purpose: the collection, due out Friday, and the accompanying ad is a self-proclaimed love letter to New York and London (or even more local, according to the press release, “from the East River to the Thames, Scarr’s Pizza to the Rules”). The collection’s anchor is a Palace trailer on CK’s 1994 classic CK One fragrance — often considered the first unisex fragrance — that both brands promise is a “pleasantly mild scent” that is “appropriately scented” and “certainly not pungent”. On the outfit front, there are signature pieces that range from easy-to-wear logo turtleneck sweaters to baggy denim, and matching jackets with basketball jerseys.
