Pictures show the scale of the massive wildfires ravaging Greece

Hundreds of wildfires in Greece have forced people to evacuate as the country struggles to regain control of the natural disaster.

On the Greek island of Evia, which produces many staples, including olives, figs and honey, wildfires have forced residents and their animals onto ferries and into makeshift shelters. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said: “The past few days have been one of the most difficult days for our country in decades. “We are dealing with a natural disaster of unprecedented scale.” The causes of the fires are yet to be determined, although they are closely linked to human-caused climate change. The planet has warmed by 2.1 degrees since 1880, according to NASA, exacerbating the frequency and scale of disasters. The forest fire season is getting longer and longer. And the heat wave is becoming hotter, occurs more often and lasts longer.

These photos showcase the bravery of those fighting to put out the flames and the hardships of evacuees who are carrying personal items and injured or burned animals.
