Police shooting in Harlem: NYPD officer killed, another injured reacting to domestic incident in Harlem, official says

Lashawn McNeil, the suspect in the deadly shooting, is in critical condition at the hospital, the New York Police Department told CNN.

A law enforcement source previously reported to CNN that a civilian believed to be involved in the incident was killed, but that was not the case.

The incident happened after officers answered an inbound call around 6 p.m., officials said.

Mayor Eric Adams, who was at Harlem Hospital where the officers were arrested, described the shooting as an attack on the city’s children and families.

“It was our city against the killers,” Adams said.

“We will need everyone on the same page to complete this task,” he added. “Let me be clear, there are no gun manufacturers in New York City. We don’t make guns here. How do we get rid of thousands of guns on the street and they still find their way into the City? New York City in the hands of murderers?”

Adams, a former police officer, was mayor for three weeks, around the time that five NYPD officers were shot.

James Essig, NYPD’s Chief of Detectives, said at a news conference he used the weapon in the shooting, a Glock 45, with a high-capacity magazine that can hold up to 40 additional rounds.

The gun was stolen from Baltimore in 2017, he added, and the NYPD is working with the Joint Firearms Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to track down the gun.

Attorney General Merrick Garland offered his condolences to New York Police Department Commissioner Keechant Sewell and told her the Department of Justice and the FBI were ready to assist, according to a tweet. The FBI was in touch with their counterparts at the NYPD, he added.

Sewell said the police department is mourning and angry.

“We’ve been four times this month flocking to the scene of NYPD officers who were fatally shot by violent criminals for illegal gun possession,” Sewell said.

“Please pray for our officer who is lying on his deathbed and fighting for his life. And every day appreciate the courage and sacrifice of the men and women of the NYPD. “, she said.

New York Attorney General Letitia James released a statement in response to the shooting, saying, “The entire state of New York is in mourning tonight. As we wait, my office can confirm. jurisdiction in this matter. We pray for the safety of the police and our community.”

This is a developing story and will be updated.

CNN’s Shimon Prokupecz and Rob Frehse contributed to this report.
