NEW DELHI: The new-look chartered accounting course has been built with a multidisciplinary focus that will greatly expand the learning range of future CAs who will study diverse topics – from the heart physics to AI, from blockchain technology to data science and India’s Constitution and traditional knowledge, as envisaged in the National Education Policy 2020.
Announcement of the new curriculum pending the approval of the Center, Institute of Certified Public Accountants of India (ICAI) on the sidelines of its two days National Education Summit on Trade said it is also looking into the possibility of offering exams in a computer-based mode and in Indian languages. Currently, there are eighty thousand students preparing for the CA exam in the country.
Together with the Association of Indian Universities, the National Council for Education and Training Research (NCERT), and National Council on Teacher Education (NCTE), ICAI has also launched a model curriculum for commerce students right from the high school level through to university studies. Founded in 1949, ICAI has grown into the second largest accounting body in the world with approximately 3.65 thousand CAs and 44 marine programs.
Chairman of ICAI Debashi Mitra says, “As an educator, the focus of the organization is on preparing global professionals. So, in that direction, we developed a new course curriculum with a lot of emphasis on applying intellectual, technical, ethical, new. NEP. The curriculum is currently awaiting approval from the Indian government.”
Regarding the curriculum, Mitra said, “If you don’t study technology, you won’t get far. What is happening globally is something that we cannot stand aside. And accounting if you keep it within ICAI’s boundaries, then we don’t enforce accounting fairness. Accounting should not only be opened to the whole country by way of uniformity and should have the same accounting for the whole world.
“So the focus is on technology to help our experts become global experts. He shouldn’t just be an Indian accountant, global best practices must be included in the curriculum. We cannot turn a blind eye to NEP 2020, which says it will put more pressure on mental manipulation and away from memorization. So with technology and global best practices, unless you’re ethical, nothing will happen. Any curriculum without ethics is of no use. Today our test system is pen and paper. Can we think of an online exam testing system in the future? In the future, maybe we should be online.
Mitra says that the new curriculum takes a multidisciplinary approach and that the credits earned in the CA course will be part of the Academic Credit Bank. ICAI also offers a sample curriculum — ‘ICAI Exemplar: Preparing Trade Graduates for Future Ready’ — that combines a competency-based approach through well-designed curriculum with goal statements, learning outcomes, and course curriculum, for high school trade education and graduate courses.
