The Reds are expected to complete a mass overhaul of their squad in the transfer window following their disastrous performances throughout the 2021/22 campaign. Erik ten Hag want to strengthen their defense at Old Trafford this summer.
Ajax Jurrien Timber and Lisandro Martinez pair have been linked with a move to the club and it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils can sign the duo. Amid those questions, United hero Ferdinand has hinted that as many of United’s existing options as possible – including Maguire – could be brought up this summer.
Talk about him Vibe with Five podcast, he said: “I would be interested in what Ten Hag does in that area [defence]. We are talking about the young man, Timber, at Ajax, a small centre-back. I will be interested to see what happens with [Raphael] Varane, [Victor] Lindelof and Maguire, Eric Bailly too, I think one or two of them will go.”
Of course, no matter what work this summer, fans will be eager to see obvious improvements in the defense under Ten Hag. Red Devils conceded 57 Premier League Goals last season – more than relegation goals Burnley – and the most for the club in a single top-flight season in over 30 years.

That is although United entered the market for a centre-back last summer, signing Raphael Varane from Real Madrid. World Cup Winner arriving with fees believed to be in the region of £34m and he was supposed to bolster a leaky defence.
However, things did not turn out that way as the Frenchman struggled with injuries and inconsistent form. Since then, he has called on his teammates – and defensive colleagues – to improve next season.
“I think we have good players, experienced players,” Varane said. “I think it’s not just about the defense but about the whole team. And I think we can improve, we can defend better.
“We can control more in games. Sometimes we can play very well for 20-30 minutes and then play poorly for 10 or 15 minutes. We lost a lot of points like this. I think if we are consistent we can improve a lot. So I think it’s a collective work that we have to do.”
While it is thought the Red Devils could welcome defensive recruits to the club this summer, it seems that attack is the first stop. Recent reports have alluded to a Deal imminent for Ajax winger Antonywho worked with Ten Hag to good effect.
