I think you can feel a sort of sense of insecurity throughout the entire space. ”

Though the slap overshadowed much of the ceremony, Dawson took it upon himself to channel the celebratory energy to winners like Questlove—First whose director, Summer of the soul, took home the statue for best documentary shortly after Smith attacked the Rock.

Dawson smiled at the memory. “Seeing Questlove… I had to give him my award at the Independent Spirit Awards, and it means a lot. And especially that story.”

Even with the looming drama of the slap, Dawson said, people still enjoy the aftermath of the Oscars — acting as casual as they can while “cramming into the face with In-N-Out.” “. But their mixed feelings are obviously very common.

“[The night] like the moment we’re still in it. And I think that’s important because things are very worrying right now.
