Sam Mewis can’t play for USA at World Cup after surgery

midfielder Sam Mewis underwent a second knee surgery and was unable to play for USA in Women’s World Cup this summer.

Mewis, who also plays for Current Kansas City inside National Women’s Soccer Leagueshe first had surgery on her right knee in August 2021. But she requested another surgery last week, She announced Monday on social media.

“It’s been a really difficult time for me personally and I’ve been devastated to be away from football for so long,” she said.

The loss was a blow to the United States as Mewis, 30, is considered one of the best players in the world in her position. Mewis is also expected to miss the upcoming NWSL season with the Current Line.

“I don’t have a specific timeline for returning to football, but I will do my best to recover as I always do,” Mewis said.

Mewis was originally supposed to be sidelined for two months after his first surgery. She was transferred to the Current before the 2022 season and made a few pre-season appearances, but she did not play in a regular-season game against the team.

Has now bought out Mewis’ previous contract and signed her a new deal for 2023.

Mewis was on the U.S. team that won the 2019 World Cup. A regular on the national team since 2016 with 83 appearances, Mewis was named the 2020 U.S. Soccer Player of the Year. .

American coach Vlatko Andonovski hinted that Mewis’ injury could be more serious than initially thought as the team were in New Zealand for training camp and a few games earlier this month.

“At this point, I don’t want to guess what time or whether she’ll be back,” Andonovski said. “With Sam, it’s a long-term injury and at this point we probably won’t go into detail about that.”

Mewis last played for the United States at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics in a bronze medal match against Australia.

The team’s midfield will also likely be absent Julie Ertzwho took maternity leave from her son Madden in August and has not returned to training.

The United States has won the past two World Cups and will be competing to lift the trophy for a third straight time this summer. Hosted by Australia and New Zealand, the month-long tournament will take place on 20 July.
