Seahawks’ Carroll considers rookie Kenneth Walker a three-time RB

Rookies run back Kenneth Walker III attracted the attention of Seattle Seahawks football team head coach Pete Carroll.

Carroll told The Seattle Times that he was surprised by Walker is “all-rounder” as a player.

“You talk about surprises, I’m surprised. I’m surprised he’s so good,” Carroll said of Walker. “One runner, he’s blocking. Again, I thought I mentioned this the other day, but his pass guard thing, he just turned the page (from college) .. working really hard with him, so that’s important.

“But I think for this boy everything is important. He wants to be great and won’t let any of the stones get undone. So I’m really excited to hear he’s going. He’s going to have a good time in this game and get him comfortable with the pace of the game and all that. I hope he does well.”

Carroll later asserted that he would be comfortable with Walker playing “all three games down”.

Seattle picked Walker with pick number 41 in 2022 NFL Draft. Walker played two seasons at Wake Forest before moving in the state of Michigan in 2021. He hit 1,636 yards and 18 touches in 263 attempts (6.2 yards each) last season, and will be sixth in the vote for the Heisman Trophy.

The fast 5-foot-10, 210-pound back could play an immediate big role in Seattle’s steady return to action along with the Rashaad Penny and DeeJay Dallas. The Seahawks boasted one of the league’s most powerful pounding attacks last year and lost former 1,000-yard runner Chris Carson to retirement for the season.

They can continue to rely heavily on the ground game with the midfield exchange Russell Wilson arrive Denver and the tireless competition between Geno Smith and Crew Lock.

The Seahawks are having a 7-10 campaign, their first loss since 2011. One of the few bright spots is how well they run the ball. Seattle averaged 5.0 yards per take as a team and finished sixth overall in Football Outsiders’ Rush DVOA. Penny, who has endured injuries during his four seasons, is the catalyst towards the end of the year. He’s raked in a career-high 749 yards and leads the NFL with 6.3 yards per take.

Seattle begins pre-season blocking on Saturday at Pittsburgh.
