The Delphi murder case is one of the most disturbing unsolved cases in recent memory. But how exactly did the investigators get to the truth??
In case you’ve never followed the case update before… A day before Valentine’s Day 2017, 14 years old Liberty “Libby” in German and 13 years old Abigail “Abby” Williams was taken by Libby’s sister at the Delphi Historic Trail in Delphi, Indiana. They posted a photo on social media from the Monon High Bridge Trail and then disappeared. After a brief, difficult search, their bodies were found about half a mile away on the banks of Deer Creek.
Quickly determining that this was a murder investigation, police released a grainy photo of a man walking towards the girls, as well as a muffled audio clip in which can be heard. heard the voice of a man saying the phrase, “down the hill”. Investigators revealed these came from Libby’s phone – she apparently saw the man and thought to snap a picture and started recording her phone just in case.
Police later revealed that they had more evidence but were keeping it a secret so as not to “compromise” the eventual criminal prosecution. Authorities to this day have never released any information about how the girls were killed. Since then, many homes in Central Indiana have shone orange lights on their porches at the request of Libby’s mother, as a reminder that the crime remains unsolved.
Cuts to December 2021 when Indiana State Police start asking around about teen connections to Instagram user with profile name anthony_shots between 2016 and 2017, citing an unspecified connection to the murders. It turns out that the man behind this account was using a photo of a male model (pictured above, left) to photograph the underage victim catfish. The police discovered that the man was Kegan Kline (above, right) from Peru, Indiana.
(NOTE: The police made it clear that the model was never a person interested in the case and had nothing to do with it. In fact, he actually became a cop!)
Kline is currently in prison, awaiting trial on 30 counts including child exploitation, possessing child pornographyand child molestation. Kline was apparently first interrogated by FBI only 11 days after the girls’ bodies were discovered. According to an affidavit from Miami County, obtained by WTHRThe 27-year-old admitted to using his IG account to find underage girls then started chatting with them on Snapchat. He said he received an estimated 100 sexual photos and videos from about 15 different teenage girls. He claims the youngest girls are 15 years old. But files obtained on his phone show erotic images of young girls as young as 3. Disgusting.
But he was not charged with anything related to Libby or Abby?
Not yet. His public defender said in a statement to the press at the time:
“My client had nothing to do with the sudden, untimely and unfortunate passing of the girls at Delphi.”
But on Friday, Murder sheet podcast dropping a bomb: a leaked transcript of a police interrogation with Kline in which he admit Contact Libby!
In the 194-page transcript (you can find the full THIS), police reveal why they linked the anthony_shots account to the murders in the first place: they have evidence that Libby interacted with the account while asleep (presumably with Abby) at night before she went missing. Officers explained from what they saw that the 14-year-old was “absolutely mesmerized” by the fake character he was using online. Kline said he did not receive photos from Libby but admitted to receiving photos from one of her friends, who was also asleep.
Although he admits to contacting her, he claims to have no recollection of arranging a meeting on the Monon High Bridge Trail. However, police say they have evidence one of the girls at the sleeping spot contacted the anthony_shots account again after the teen’s body was discovered to ask if he knew what happened to the teen’s body. Libby did not and he replied:
“OMG what happened”
“Yes, we were supposed to meet but she never showed up.”
Kline insists he never wrote that message – and later claimed multiple people had access to that account. He specifically named his father as one of those men. (In another interview, Kline also mentioned that his father was fond of “younger women” and had recently had sex with a 17-year-old.) Investigators apparently believe anthony_shots to be little. at least two people, based on different ways of speaking.
Finally, in the shocking transcript, the officers revealed two more huge pieces of information: first, they said that Kline actually failed his polygraph test on questions about knowing anything. something about the Delphi murder investigation.
Second, they claim to have evidence that after the first interview, he went home and deleted his Instagram and Snapchat accounts that day – and then did a search for “how long does DNA last?”
How do they not have enough to catch this man? Unfortunately evidence of lying is not proof of murder… And the investigation seems to have a long way to go to find that out.
Kline will return to court on April 14. We hope this leak will provide more information as investigators seek the truth.
