Known for being an incurable recluse, Simi has said of her reluctance to be in the limelight: “I’m a very private person. Even the New Year’s are spent celebrating. away from the crowds, although there will be some friends that I would like to bring newcomers in the year with.”
Regarding her age, she joked, “How old am I? Well… on a bad day, I feel 23. On a good day, I feel 17. Today is obviously a good day. I I’ve never been satisfied with just doing one thing. I’ve never been just an actress, a TV presenter or anything. And when people say it. I’m ahead of my time, I take that as a compliment. It means I’m doing things that aren’t in vogue.”
Talking about her favorite roles, she said, “As an actress, many people remember me by Mera Naam Joker to this day. For others, I’m the smart evil woman in Karz and the rest I can be the mysterious woman in Conrad Rooks’ Siddharth or in Satyajit Ray’s Aranyer Din Ratri… When I’m Up TV with It’s A Woman’s World, I never thought it would be so satisfying. Meeting Simi Garewal again was my best attempt. ”
On her famous trend towards white clothes: “I will continue to wear white. My passion for color has followed me for as long as I can remember. Even as a kid, my best party dresses were white. Today I can shop for clothes in different colors. I just bought myself two black suits. But I can never wear them. If I wear any color other than white, I will see a stranger in the mirror.”
How does she look back on her life and career? “With an overwhelming sense of fulfillment. But I will be honest. I really feel a gnawing sadness sometimes. I didn’t make a great glorious movie that I will be remembered for forever. But hey, I’ve done a lot of other things that have earned me immense recognition, including a talk show (Rendezvous With Simi Garewal), which is being emulated by all and sundry. It is very flattering. ”
Simi Garewal was always ahead of her time. When Indian actresses are dignified, the dashing and shy Simi is a breath of fresh air. There is no pretense about her personality which is why she has become a star in the works of India’s greatest filmmakers: Mehboob Khan (Son Of India), K Asif (Love & God), Satyajit Ray (Aranyer Din Ratri), Raj Kapoor (Mera Naam Joker), KA Abbas (Do Boond Pani) and Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Namak Haraam).
Although her most famous role is in running Karz, an adaptation of the average novel The Reincarnation Of Peter Proud, there is only one thing to be proud of and that is Laxmikant’s wonderful music- Pyarellal. Simi excelled in other films such as Conrad Rooks’ Siddhartha, Raj Khosla’s Do Badan and Girish Ranjan’s Dak Bungla.
