India’s vice-captain Smriti Mandhana is likely to miss the opening match of the Women’s T20 World Cup against Pakistan on Sunday as she is yet to recover from a finger injury she sustained during a warm-up match. The 26-year-old opener injured his left middle finger while hitting the ball during the warm-up game against Australia on Monday. “She got injured during the practice match. We can’t say yet that she won’t be in the World Cup. But she could miss the match against Pakistan,” an ICC source told PTI. Southpaw beat Australia in third place instead of her usual opening spot. Her rounds lasted only three balls.

Mandhana then missed India’s second warm-up match against Bangladesh on Wednesday.

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s fitness is also a concern. She injured her shoulder in the Tri-Series final against South Africa last week.

“The body is fine. It will be better with rest,” Kaur said after the final.

However, the big-time middleweight smasher failed to beat India’s two warm-up matches.

‘Women in Blue’ are placed alongside Great Britain, Pakistan, the West Indies and Ireland in Group B.
