After winning the race three years ago, So Si Bon is chasing another Lord Stakes at Caulfield
So Si Bon may have been a cause of disappointment for bettors in his long career but for his coaches, he’s a likable guy.
The only thing for current coaches Ben and J.D. Hayes is that he doesn’t win as often as they would like, but on Sunday he will be chasing a second win in the Premier League. Listed shares of God (1700m) in Caulfield.
After starting his career with Robbie Laing, where he registered a single win, at Pakenham in September 2016, So Si Bon has landed a spot in the Group 1 company several times.
At the age of four, halfway through, So Si Bon was transferred to Lindsay Park, where it was not until Lord Stakes in 2018 that the groundbreaking final gel polish for the new barn took place.
Ben Hayes said that although So Si Bon has been promoted for many years, now that he is eight years old, the gelding horse is the strongest horse in the yard.
“Aside from gel surgery, he has never been to the vet once,” says Hayes.
“He is the strongest horse in the yard. He doesn’t have anything, he doesn’t have a habit of laughing. He is a very straight forward horse to train. “
So Si Bon tasted success for the last time in the VOBIS Gold Mile (1600m) at Caulfield in April and on Sunday will line up for the start of Saturday’s prep.
His most recent outing was when he finished seventh in Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on 11 December.
“He had a wide draw there. We were chasing the wet track but unfortunately that track was dry before his race,” Hayes said.
“But we are really happy with him. He is coping with his race and shows no sign of training at all.
“We are delighted he is back at Euroa and he will return to Flemington on Tuesday and settle down very well.
“He’s performed well on dry surfaces before, he’s raced well at Caulfield, it’s probably his best track.”
