The country’s intelligence agency said it had informed both of the group’s plot.

Al-Shabab, an armed group with links to al-Qaeda, plans to target Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed and Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble, the country’s intelligence agencies warned on Tuesday.

The group’s violence, which aims to topple the United Nations-backed central government and impose its own hardline version of Islamic law, has been an obstacle to parliamentary elections since May. 11.

“We have informed key government officials of a plot the al-Shabab mafia wants to target the president and prime minister,” the National Intelligence and Security Service said on Twitter. “Mohamed Mahir, a senior member of al Shabaab, is plotting.”

The agency did not give further details.

Spokespersons at the offices of President Mohamed and Prime Minister Roble were not immediately available for comment.

An Al-Shabab spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

The group regularly attacks civilians and government officials and facilities. In February, it hit electoral deputies in the capital, Mogadishu. The delegates were unharmed, but six bystanders were killed.

Late last month, al-Shabab kill 48 people in Beledweyne, about 300km (185 mi) north of Mogadishu, consisted of merchants, clerics, officials, and commoners.

Among the dead was Amina Mohamed Abdi, a lawmaker and vocal critic of the government, ahead of her scheduled re-election.
