Southern Baptists say they face US federal investigation after sexual abuse claims

(Reuters) – The Southern Baptist Convention, the largest evangelical denomination in the United States, said on Friday several of its organizations were being investigated by the Justice Department, after a report found the church had prosecuted the church. misrepresenting allegations of sexual abuse and victim abuse.

The convention did not provide details of the investigation and the Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But the church’s executive committee said in a statement that it would fully cooperate with the investigation and would “transparently address the scourge of sexual abuse.”

An internal report commissioned by the Convention and published in May found that complaints of sexual abuse by pastors and staff were either ignored or covered up by top clerics, a fact that economy has been going on for decades.

The convention, with 13.7 million members, has since issued a formal apology for the abuse and published a list of hundreds of criminally convicted offenders, whose civil convictions were against them. back them or confess their behavior.

In its statement, the Convention’s executive committee said the Justice Department’s investigation “will include multiple SBC entities.” Each entity is settled for full and complete cooperation, it added.
