Indian polisher Suryakumar Yadav was on the cusp of breaking the veteran’s opener Shikhar Dhawanhuge T20I record. With India going to face South Africa in a three-match T20I series, which begins later on Wednesday, Suryakumar could overtake Dhawan as the man with the most T20I defeats for Team India in a calendar year. Suryakumar (692) needed just eight runs to overtake Dhawan, who accumulated 689 runs in 2018 in the shortest form. The 32-year-old can also surpass the likes of Netherland Max O’Dowd (702), of Ireland Kevin O’Brien (729) and Paul Stirling (748) on the Pakistan-led list defeating Mohammad Rizwan (1,326) and Babar Azam (939).
Suryakumar on Wednesday overtook Babar as the second-ranked T20I player in the world, and only behind Rizwan.
Suryakumar now has 801 rating points after beating 69 wins in 36 serves in its third game against Australia in Hyderabad on Sunday, helping India move past a 2-1 streak.
Previously, Suryakumar had overtaken Babar to take third place in the standings after a 25-46 tackle in his first T20I against Australia, but Babar was ahead of him with a stunning strike of the century in his third T20I. two before England.
Suryakumar lost to a golden duck in his second T20I match against Australia which also dropped him below Markam, but he is back in the top three and will now aim for the top of the table.
He reached second place in the T20 rankings for the first time in August of this year following his victory over the West Indies.
