Tesla is currently embroiled in another controversy when a black gay woman recently filed a lawsuit against the company, accusing the company of turning a blind eye to what she claims is rampant defamation. about race and homophobia as well as the physical stress she endured at the Tesla facility in California.

While this is not the first such accusation against Tesla, it is likely to do more damage to the image of the world’s most dominant electric vehicle (EV) maker.

According to reports, Kaylen Barker was formerly a contract worker responsible for inspecting brake components at a sub-assembly plant in Lathrop. During her tenure, she says she was subjected to various racial insults. Her complaint further states that a white colleague even beat her with a hot sharpener while abusing her because of her race as well as her sexual orientation. “I feel like I’ve been tortured and kicked back in time before African-Americans had civil rights,” she said in her statement.

What’s even more damaging for Tesla, however, is that Barker says she complained about these incidents to her supervisor but was fired from her job on October 29, just a few weeks. after raising the issue.

This latest lawsuit may further obscure Tesla’s image, which has been battered in the past for inaction on complaints of racial abuse. In May last year, a former black employee of the company won a $1 million discrimination award in arbitration because Tesla couldn’t stop its supervisors from using the ‘N’ word. .

Tesla has denied allegations of racial abuse at its facilities in the past but has yet to issue a statement on Barker’s allegations. However, its facility in Fremont has seen several cases of workers complaining of racism and/or sexual harassment. While it may seem like a smaller problem in comparison, many workers here also end up having a bad working environment.

Tesla employees don’t have a formal union, unlike those at other major auto brands like Ford and GM. This may also be one of the reasons why Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been ignored in recent meetings between US President Joe Biden and the heads of top companies.
