Tesla will disable in-dash video games while their cars are in motion – TechCrunch
Tesla is quick to respond NHTSA investigation of the game in-dash while the car is in motion. Guardians Yes have learned Tesla will provide an update that disables the On-the-Go Passenger Play feature. A spokesman for the regulator said Tesla promised the change after discussing the matter with officials. There’s no mention of when the update might arrive, but it’s safe to say you’ll have to park for future gaming sessions.
The representative emphasized that the investigation will continue despite the update. NHTSA reiterates that the Vehicle Safety Act prohibits companies from selling vehicles that present significant safety risks, including from distracted driving. The investigation covers about 580,000 Tesla electric vehicles from the 2017 model year to 2022.
Tesla no longer operates a public relations team and was not available for comment. However, the feature change is not surprising. Inaction could make the consequences worse if NHTSA finds Tesla was negligent. There is also the issue of competitive pressure. Mercedes-Benz recently fixed a bug enable mid-drive video playback – it wouldn’t be nice if Tesla refused to follow suit.
