A collection of nearly 500 photographs, the 388-page book recounts the history of hip-hop from the 1980s to the present day, told through the jewels that have adorned the body’s greatest personalities. categories — in pictures and rhymes. From Run-DMC’s gold chain to Jay-ZRoc-A-Fella’s Pendant Cardinecklace with nameplate encrusted with diamonds, Ice explores the relationship between decor and identity through vivid imagery and thought-provoking personal essays from Ferg and pioneers including Slick Rick and LL Cool J.

Jay-Z, 18 years old in this photo and still an unknown in the hip-hop scene, was very serious about his jewelry from the start. While attending a photo session with friend and rapper Jaz-O, Hov wore a double gold chain with anchor pendant, tiger watch, king cobra pendant, ring four Tiger finger and Gucci bracelet. The Gucci link was popularized by the Gucci brand, but it is officially known as a marine link, consisting of large oval links that are flattened or closed together.
