The horrifying moment a mother was swept away by strong currents in front of her child after plunging into a frozen river was caught on camera

On Wednesday, a terrified mother watched her baby as she was swept away by powerful electric currents after jumping into a frozen cliff Oredezh River to mark the Orthodox Epiphany near St.Petersburg, Russia. In case you don’t know, Daily mail reports that some people believe that a dip in the icy waters blessed with the annual ceremony has special healing properties. While many people usually mark Epiphany in groups, the 40-year-old decided to join the tradition alone.

Footage of the heartbreaking moment shows the mother wearing only a black one-piece swimsuit as she stands on thick ice next to a hole drilled for the event. In the viral video, she walks across the heart before holding her nose and plunging her feet into the water first. However, things took a turn for the worse when a strong current of about 10 ft/s quickly pulled her body under the ice. Immediately there was a panic, her children crying and screaming for their “mom” that could be heard in the background.

A man believed to be her husband has dived into frigid waters in an attempt to find the mother fish – but without success. Follow Daily Mail, rEscue divers soon arrived to search for the unidentified woman. But despite the efforts of her husband and divers, her body has not been found and is presumed to have drowned. So sad…

After the tragic incident, the head of emergency services in the region Alexander Zuyev ordered the group to cut the ice hole in a section of the river where the currents are usually too strong. He said, according to Daily mail:

“The woman rushed into a place with no lifeguards or proper lighting in an unsuitable ice pit. It is one of the most dangerous rivers in the Leningrad region and people drown there every year, even in the summer. ‘ She ‘simply went with the flow.’ “

Our hearts go out to this woman’s children at this time. We can’t even imagine how painful and difficult this must be to see this happen.
