The Morning After: Cryptocurrencies May Be More Concentrated Than You Think

One of the benefits of cryptocurrencies is that no particular company, central bank, or government has control. Uh, right?

That may not be true. Researchers for a report commissioned by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) suggest there may be “unintentional centralization” in these supposedly decentralized systems.

Cryptocurrency power is concentrated among people or organizations with a large slice of the pie. Almost like any other capitalist system? Gasp.

“Unintentional centralization” is the term used, defined as instances where an entity has faltered in the face of a so-called decentralized system. This can provide an opportunity for them to forge ownership records. The report also notes the three ISPs handle 60% of all bitcoin traffic.

The report says 21% of nodes are running an old, vulnerable version of the core bitcoin client. Attackers can target these nodes and take over the majority of the blockchain network. Theoretically, at least. But there have been a lot of crypto attacks in the past few years. There’s nothing wrong with some skepticism.

Real life examples already exist: CNBCreport of . It has problems with a large account holder that has influence over the entire platform.
