I’m Thunderstruck ticking all the boxes for his coaches Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr as he moves towards his spring goal of Cox Tấm sheet.
The next step on that journey is Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Sandown on Sunday as the 5-year-old New Zealander aims to return to the weight-for-age level.
I’m Thunderstruck chased Alligator Blood in Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) in Flemington on September 10 in a run that Price is expected to take some part in.
“I think he’s going to train for a few days,” Price said.
“Sunday morning he played well and then on Monday he played well, and I think he is a better horse now than in the last preparation.
“He was a little fatter in the last prep, for whatever reason and we didn’t catch him right, but he ran well in the All-Star Mile, and he was amazing in The Doncaster .
“This time, he was right in the area. He doesn’t find it difficult to run, it’s the stuff of good horses. “
I’m the Thunderstruck who crossed the 1600m only once in his career, finishing sixth on the heavyweight circuit in Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick last April.
That comes a week after a tight second finish against Underwood rival Mr Brightside in Group 1 Doncaster Handicap (1600m).
Price doesn’t see the ride as an issue, especially in a small area of weight-for-age.
“It was a small field. There will be one up ahead, Alligator Blood, the rest will be piled up,” said Price.
“It doesn’t look like a crazy 1800 meters. By weight for age, they roll and then sprint.
“He is a heavyweight horse so I don’t think the tempo will work against him and I think 1800 meters will be fine.
“You would rub your hands together if you were the MRC. Aside from Anamoe and maybe one or two others, these are Plate Horse Cox. “
“That was always the plan,” Price said.
“It’s a good show, a busy race show, still a good show if you get it right.
“As far as possible.”
