Gokhale was detained by police for two days on December 6 for a tweet endorsing a fake news report about PM Narendra Modivisited Morbi after the bridge collapse there on October 31, which claimed the lives of 135 people.
Director of Trinamool and West Bengal prime minister Mamata Banerjee said the arrest demonstrates the “hostile attitude” of the BJP government.
Case of forgery
Gokhale, 35, tweeted a piece that appeared to have been published in a leading Gujarati newspaper. It claims that a right to information query revealed that the Gujarat government spent Rs 30 crore on Modi’s visit to Morbi.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crime) Jitendra Yadav said, “When we contacted Gujarat Samachar, management told us that this news was never published and that it is completely fake and created by someone to look genuine. So we detained gokhale for spreading fake news.”
Police arrested TMC spokesman from Jaipur on Rajasthan in the first hours of Tuesday.
An FIR has been registered under Sections 465, 469, 471 of the Indian Penal Code (all related to forgery) and 501 (printing or engraving matter known to be defamatory).
