TEVEKKELI, Turkey (Reuters) – Drone footage over southern Turkey shows a crack cutting across fields, roads, streams and hillsides, caused by a major earthquake hit the area at the beginning of the week.

The jagged scar of bare and cracked ground, opened up by Monday’s earthquake, cuts deep into embankments and runs along bare lands that stretch to the horizon near the town of Tevekkeli, province Kahramanmaras southern Turkey.

When it hit the highway, it smashed the runway and metal barriers. Huge boulders had fallen into the hills by the roadside.

Drivers had to wait their turn to navigate the interrupted route.

The total death toll in the region’s deadliest earthquake in two decades that struck southern Turkey and Syria was more than 22,000 on Friday.

Rescue teams rescued a 10-day-old baby and his mother on Friday after they became trapped in the rubble of a building in Turkey and dug up several people from other locations as General President Tayyip Erdogan said the government should act faster.
