Twitter starts laying off staff in India

NEW DELHI: Twitter has begun laying off staff in India as part of a round of global job cuts demanded by the social media platform’s new owner Elon Musk to gain economies of scale and make a $44 billion acquisition possible.
World’s richest businessman Musk started his play at Twitter last week by firing the CEO Parag Agrawal as well as the chief financial officer and several other top executives.
Followed by the departure of the top management. Musk has now begun a major exercise to reduce the company’s global workforce.
“The layoffs have started. Some of my co-workers have been emailed about this”, a Twitter India staff told PTI on condition of anonymity.
Another source said the layoffs affected a “significant portion” of the Indian team.
Full details of the job cuts were not immediately available.
Twitter India did not respond to email queries.
The US-based social media platform, in an internal email to employees earlier, said, “In our efforts to put Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult difficult to reduce the global workforce on Friday.”
It says “everyone will receive a personalized email”.
The company will temporarily close all offices to ensure the safety of employees as well as the Twitter system and customer data.
“If you are at the office or on your way to the office, please come home,” Twitter said.
While Twitter has several agreements with the government on freedom of expression, the company in the email banned employees from discussing confidential company information on social media, with the press or elsewhere. other.
