Ukraine Says Recaptured Territory In East, As Annexation Polls Open

Ukraine says territory is recaptured in the east, as merger probe opens

Today, Kyiv said its forces had recaptured a village in eastern Donetsk.

Kyiv said on Friday its forces had recaptured a village in the eastern Donetsk region and the territory around another war-torn town there, as its proxies Moscow holds a vote on the annexation by Russia.

“Ukrainian troops have recaptured the village of Yatskivka in the Donetsk region,” Oleksiy Gromov, a senior military official, told reporters.

Kyiv’s forces have “regained control of positions south of Bakhmut”, Gromov added.

Yatskivka lies on the eastern bank of the strategic Oskil River, which Kyiv’s forces crossed after retaking territories in the neighboring Kharkiv region.

Bakhmut, a key city with a population of 70,000 before the war, is also located in the Donetsk region and has been under attack by Russia for months. Moscow’s forces failed to capture it.

The Donetsk region and three other Russian-controlled Ukrainian provinces – Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia – are holding a vote on whether to annex Moscow.

The ballots were dismissed by Kyiv and his Western allies as a “sham”
