Umbrella Academy season 3 ends, explained

[Ed. note: This post contains spoilers for the season 3 timeline of The Umbrella Academy. You probably knew that, but if not, look out!]

Just when the Hargreeves children thought they were capable of handling the space-time continuum, they were thrown into another loop – or rather, into another loop. During the finale, the members of Umbrella Academy find themselves in an alternate reality, where their father Reginald’s name is on a lot of buildings, and they have no powers (and they’re not the only ones). best).

So what does all that mean in the grand scheme of Oh Academy? That’s a complicated question, really. Netflix didn’t refresh the series butbut the idea of not having a season 4 is hard to imagine, especially since there are so many other balls still being worked on for the series beyond a move to a different timeline.

Will Allison end up betraying Umbrella Academy?

After Allison smacks Reginald on the head, she begins to get used to his machine. While the rest of the Hargreeves tried to stop her, Viktor let her go, even saying that he do trust her – just let her press the button that others don’t want to press.

It’s not clear if what Allison did was really something she fully understood. After all, it seems Reginald has programmed her for a world in which she has the family she wants. Even so, she at least stepped out on the other side with not only Claire by her side but also Ray, a choice that actress Emmy Raver-Lampman told Polygon will probably haunt her: I think there’s a lot of guilt that’s going to affect her at some point. She had a happy ending, but at the expense of others she held dear. ”

Why don’t they have powers? Where did Sloane go?

I am not an expert on the technology of the future, possibly aliens. But is the world Reginald’s machine has thrown them into – where the rest of Hargreeves’ children are powerless, and where Sloane has disappeared for some reason – where he intends to land?

In this new world, Reginald seems to be even a captain of the industry. This new world, maybe, is a testament to what he can achieve without any super-young at all, or – maybe? – he channeled their full power into some other alien scheme. Kids who remember everything (Allison, Sparrow Ben, Luther, Klaus, Viktor, Five, Diego and Lila) may be isolated because of the connection to the machine that got them there, yet it still works.

Powerless in this brave new reality, Aidan Gallagher (Five) hopes that everyone will adjust in their own way. “As far as Five goes, I think he can,” Gallagher told Polygon. “However, it is difficult, because he is no longer relying on his strength to make a physical difference between what he used to do and what his body and reflexes think he is. what he can do compared to what his body is actually trained to do. So he will probably have to be a little more skillful in the coming seasons.”

Ritu Arya, who plays Lila, is not entirely optimistic for her character:”[Lila] won’t know how to operate. I think much of her confidence and courage comes from this strength. So I don’t know how she will be able to live. Maybe she’ll be really clumsy. ”

Who is that with Reginald at the window?

From what it looked like, the woman by Reginald’s side was the same woman who had always been by his side, in one way or another: Alice, his wife and the basis for the “Mother” robot. which he kept around Umbrella Academy (and Sparrow Academy), even though she was Not there is called “Mother”, you perv).

In a flashback to Luther’s time on the moon, we see the original flavored Reginald that kept Alice during the moon’s cold creation. Is that why (at least like anything else in Umbrella Academy) that in this new world where Reginald uses more capital, maybe he could have saved Alice somehow?

However, what the hell was Reginald’s deal?

Although he looked over Umbrella Academy (and according to the proxy, Oh Academy), we know very little about the whole Reginald affair. He is deeply interested in adopting the miraculous (?) children born to 43 women on the 12th hour of October 1, 1989. An eccentric billionaire and inventor, pilot of the Oh Academy told us that Reginald was uniquely suited to be “determined to receive as many children as possible.”

Since the end of season 3, we also know it’s important for him to have seven kid gives… whatever that machine he has at the end of the season. Also, he’s an alien, which might account for some of his abilities with technology. He was, at least once, connected enough to run in the same circle as the shadow group that ordered the JFK attack. In the season 3 timeline, Pogo is so afraid of his abilities that he instructs the kids to give him some kind of medicine every day. And in the new season 4 timeline, his name is on nearly every skyscraper in the city.

It’s not easy looking to the comics for answers here – the story has gone off the rails almost entirely, and in the book, Reginald is introduced as an alien for several pages. After three seasons, it’s been a while since we’ve had a little more insight into exactly what his end game is (in any actual version).

What was the Jennifer incident?

Ben’s death is repeatedly linked to the “Jennifer Incident”, with little discussion from members of Umbrella Academy. (Even Sparrow Ben doesn’t seem interested in diving deeper into what happened to his own surrogate.) So, what exactly did that incident entail?

After season 3, we still don’t know. Some have theorized that Ben died by suicide, as the plaque on the manor reads “May the darkness within you find peace in the light.” But Gerard Way, who co-wrote the comic, tell Forbes that it’s a mystery that (at least in the comics) he hasn’t fully solved. “I originally just wrote the character to die, that was his function. I always knew I was going to work it out,” says Way. “Things about Oh Academy, it’s almost like improvised jazz. You are just creating it as you go on. ”

The show might still answer for it, especially since it was never particularly faithful to its original material and there were a few clues about the show, as Viktor noticed a sketch of Jennifer in the show. Ben’s room. Plus, Sparrow Ben looks like he’s going to stay, so he seems like a reasonable entry point.

Why does Harlan’s briefcase say Lester Pocket?

Does it make sense? Harlan’s briefcase say “Lester Pocket”? Like a lot of things Oh Academy, ability! The camera saves him by using this name a lot. Considering there’s a supporting character named Lester in the comics, it could be another “Jennifer Incident,” something meaningful or suggestive in a way that’s not entirely clear.

Why doesn’t the future Five want Five to save the world?

In a twist, Five discovers that the phantom founder of the Time Commission is actually… Five! And once he meets his own elder again (in a paradoxically provably panic room), the 5-year-old tells him “You don’t. […] All that remains will be… oblivion. ” He warned the Young Five that “this” – a lost arm – “is what you are going for.” He then sends out a darker warning: “Whatever you do, don’t save the world,” before his machine shuts down and he dies.

In the end he was right; Five lost his arm in the final battle against Reginald’s plot. But in the park, where they ended up in the new reality, Five’s arm was returned. Along with questions surrounding his siblings and their powers, it’s unclear if the Older Five were just warning about the Hotel Oblivion showdown or if they had accidentally activated something much darker. (Knowing about Hargreeves… yes, maybe!)

Why does Grace think Kugelblitz is God?

Most likely this is a reference to the comic book, in which Vanya (as the character is still known in the book) notices Robot Mom wearing a crucifix necklace. When she asked about it, the mother took her to Norway, where she was introduced to the Sparrow.

Okay How much did the show deviate from the booksmore than likely this is a way to combine some of the same themes, plots and visuals without directly reworking it.

Wait, so does anyone really die?

In short: Yes and no. Harlan did – offscreen, apparently at the hands of Allison – as did Klaus and Luther, both of whom were killed by Reginald. As for any other Kugelblitzed siblings, like Marcus… it’s unknown.

But in the grand scheme of things, with the timeline once again reinstall? Who knows! Luther and Klaus appear to have returned completely unharmed, and with Luther not even having a gorilla body. Whether Harlan, Pogo, or anyone else who was killed in that alt-original-alt reality will return – well, there’s nothing Umbrella Academy loves more than a remix.
