Unique marked a major win for her trainer Dan O’Sullivan with a win at Sandown with the trainer now eyeing the ‘black type’ with a mare he also owns.
Toronado’s daughter registered her third win from her last four fights when beating Ladbrokes Mix bets Handicap (2100m) on Wednesday.
The ‘miss’ came at Flemington on 19 March when Sole could not see out the 2500m journey.
Recounting Wednesday’s trip led by apprentice Alana Kelly, Uniquely ($5.50) was scored by Shultzy ($11) with die-hards Diplomat Jack ($26) and Anchorman ($21) ) in third place.
O’Sullivan blames himself for the failure Flemington believes Uniquely will make the trip.
“Sometimes we get it right, but Flemington gets it wrong,” says O’Sullivan.
“I’m not saying she’ll never run a long trip, but she doesn’t quite get it, and today it was a great ride for Alana, putting her in the right place.
“Everybody knows she is in good form. Every time she rides for me, she rides it kindly like this.
“She’s a very docile person and it’s great to win the town with her.”
Unique is the younger sister of Affair To Remember, the winner of Group 2 of the competition Matriarch Stakes (2000m) in Flemington before an injury cut her career short.
O’Sullivan said he wants to secure an urban win on Saturday with Unique and beyond some ‘black variety’.
He said Centaurea Shares listing (2000 million) in Morphettville next month could be a suitable option.
“Optimistically, Centaurea in Adelaide could be a race for her,” said O’Sullivan.
“But she’s a city winner now, so it would be nice to get another city win or some black people for her.
“She is the sister of Affair To Remember, the winner of Group 2 with a good page, so hopefully this page can add to it.”
