State Department accuses Washington of sticking to a policy of pre-emptive nuclear deterrence

America is exaggerating an assumption “The China Threat” as a pretext to expand its nuclear arsenal and maintain its military hegemony, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Wednesday, calling it a “America’s go-to strategy.”

China’s nuclear policy remains consistent and clear, the spokesman explained, noting that Beijing has always adhered to a no-first-use policy of nuclear weapons and has limited the development of nuclear weapons. its strategic weapons to the minimum required by national security. “We were never part of any form of arms race,” he said. he pointed out that China does not pose a threat or challenge to other countries it hopes to become a development partner.

Meanwhile, the US has the world’s largest nuclear arsenal and openly offers pre-emptive deterrence policies against specific countries, Zhao noted.

“What the US should do is think seriously about its nuclear policy, abandoning the Cold War mentality and hegemonic logic.” said the spokesman. He appealed to Washington “stop disrupting global strategic stability,” and reduce its nuclear arsenal to “facilitating the attainment of the ultimate goal of complete and complete denuclearization.”

Zhao’s comments come after the US Department of Defense released the so-called 2022 China Military Strength Report on Tuesday, which describes Beijing as “the most systemic and consequential challenge to our national security and to a free and open international system.” The report also suggests that China could accelerate the modernization of its nuclear force over the next decade and produce about 1,500 tactical warheads by 2035.

Last month, the US also announced the National Security Strategy 2022, in which China is considered as the “biggest geopolitical challenge,” note that Beijing intends to reshape the international order and owns “economic, diplomatic, military and technological strength to do it.”

Beijing responded by accusing Washington of being motivated by “logic of domination” and intentionally distorted China’s foreign and defense policy.
