One of the best pitchers India has produced in Trials, Ishant Sharma no longer ‘in the plan of things’ when the national selection takes place. But, over the years, the veteran racer has worked wonders with the red ball. While Jasprit Bumrah seems to have taken the baton as India’s ‘marquee catcher’, having once led Ishant for the white team. Recalling an incident when a young Bumrah joined the team, Ishant revealed a fascinating story concerning Virat kohli.
In a chat on bed, Ishant revealed that he always had high expectations for Bumrah. Recounting a 2018 incident, Ishant revealed how Bumrah didn’t have the best first spells, seeing that, Kohli wanted to chat with him but Ishant stopped him from doing so.
“I knew one day Bumrah was going to be the leader. I remember in 2018 when we were playing a Test match in Australia and he didn’t play well for the first time. Virat told me ‘I am’ I think I should go talk to him’ I said ‘He’s a very smart pitcher. He understands that. Usko chhor de. Usko pata hai kya karna, kya nehi karna (Let me be). He’s quiet. He knows what he has to do.) That way, he’s very smart. He understands the game and he understands the situation.’ Once you understand the situation, especially in the Cricket Test, you can come back very quickly,” he said.
In that same series, Bumrah won a whopping 21 hits, including a 5-stroke as India won a memorable win Down Under.
To date, Bumrah has established herself as one of the best pitchers in the world, whether in white-ball or red-ball cricket.
