Mad Magazine, an American youth satirical magazine, turns 70 this year. Mad’s commemorative volume will also include a special two-page “Mad Fold-In of [artist] Johnny Sampson folds himself! parent company DC Entertainment said in a press release Tuesday.

Other highlights:

  • Sergio Aragonés, the artist who contributed to 491 issues of Mad (second only to Jaffee), returns with “Another Look at Mad.”
  • Dick DeBartolo, the magazine’s longest-serving writer, gives “a tour of MAD-gical history.”
  • Former Editor-in-Chief John “Fucking Hot” Ficarra and art director Sam Viviano collaborated on “an illustrated look at the classic Mad employee’s trip to Bermuda.”

Mad debuted in August 1952 under the editing of Harvey Kurtzman and publisher William Gaines of Comic Entertainment (EC). Its circulation peaked at 2.1 million in 1974, an important number for a popular magazine that didn’t accept advertising (it only dropped in 2001). DC Comics’ parent company acquired Mad in the 1960s.

In 2019, after two decades of schedule changes, cuts, format modifications, and the move of Mad’s headquarters to Burbank, California, Mad stop publishing original content and turned to print collections of its best songs from 67 years ago.

Mad’s special commemorative issue is $5.99 (Cheap!) and promises “70% new material!”
