Tuesday night Failed was a big first event for the show. Even casual fans of the show know all people bring up are horror stories of their abuse and abuse. Those are all shocking things.
However, in seven seasons, this is the first time the story of a patient carrying Dr. Terry Dubrow crying. In fact, the poor doctor broke down and had to momentarily leave the consulting office to clean up on his own!
So what happened??
The potential patient is a 22-year-old transgender singer from Canada named Serena. After hormone therapy, she turned to plastic surgery to get her ideal look – like so many others, she idolizes Britney Spears. She explained:
“When I was 16 years old, I decided to become a woman through hormone replacement therapy. Hormones can make you look more feminine, but they can’t do all that plastic surgery can do for you.”
Poor Serena, like so many women visiting the docs, had poor breast augmentation and hoped Dr. Dubrow and Dr. Paul Nassif can help – and increase the size while they’re at it.
But it wasn’t the prosthetic implants that put Dr. Dubrow ahead of him. It was the love and support of Serena’s parents. See, he was surprised to learn that her parents were “completely calm with” her transformation—which he hadn’t heard enough about. But Serena spat out:
“I love my parents. I’ve always had a really great relationship with them… Whatever I want to do, very accepting. I’m so grateful I got it because I have friends who have had different circumstances, like being kicked out of the house or being told not to do what they’re doing. And it sucks. I am always supported. Just positive encouragement. Sometimes that’s all someone needs.”
And that’s what it happened. That was the key that made Dr. Dubrow lose it. He tried to hold back his tears for a moment but had to step outside immediately.
Dr. Nassif told Serena:
“I have never seen that before. I have never seen him get up, walk out of the room and fall like that.”
In the moment of confession, the talented doctor explained that they were thinking about what he would do for his children – and a reminder that many parents don’t feel the same way – broke his heart. broken:
“I am a father of three girls and a boy, and this story really comes to me because I care so much about every little thing with my children. And it just reminds me how important it is to be a supportive parent, and how when you don’t, it can take a toll on your children.”
Oh! What a touching real TV moment!
Sadly, the doctors were unable to help Serena as they deemed it too dangerous to increase the size of her implants. So she decided not to undergo the final surgery.
But we’re definitely glad she stopped by – otherwise we wouldn’t have had this amazing moment (below)!
