Always exposed to the elements, the bodywork is often affected by time.

You’ve finally driven home your dream car and boasted the shiny and vibrant look of the machine sitting pretty in your garage. There’s nothing like a new set of wheels, fresh from the showroom and straight into your parking space. But ever wondered what happens to that shine and sparkle once the elements and time start to affect it? What happens when the harsh rays of the Indian summer sun or the neighbor pigeons prepare to land on your precious possessions? There are a number of factors at play that are beyond your control, but thank the stars there are ways to keep the glitz – to a large extent nonetheless – on your ride.

And while regular cleaning and maintenance is important, nano coatings can also be of great help.

Nano coatings, also known as ceramic coatings, are uncommon among domestic car owners but are quite popular in western parts of the world. For the sole purpose of ensuring your vehicle maintains its brand new appeal, it can be a good investment.

What is nano coating?

Simply put, nano coating is the application of an extra layer to the exterior surface of a vehicle, forming a protective barrier against dust, water, oil and dirt. Some forms and types of nano coatings even make the vehicle’s exterior surface resistant to minor scratches. Super expensive coatings can also prevent bacterial growth.

Nano coatings?

Nano coatings can be in both solid and liquid form. As explained above, both forms can be classified as coatings specifically aimed at preventing dust accumulation or easily removing dust, for water particles – preventing liquid streaks, coatings heat to reduce body temperature, self-regulating coatings to erase or reduce visibility against scratches, and wear-resistant coatings to help extend the life of the paintwork, among others.

What is the nano coating process?

There are different ways of coating a vehicle, depending on factors such as whether the coating is solid or liquid.

Soap: Regularly washing your car with soap and water can remove road dust, grime, and other larger dirt.

Usually, a car is thoroughly washed with soap and water. After completely dry, the entire surface of the clay bar is cleaned. This eliminates microscopic particles and abrasions that are visible or not to the naked eye. Then, and if there’s any need, the repainting will be complete. After the paint dries, it is common to apply a polish before applying the top coat. The coating itself is done through a sponge, microfiber cloth, applicator pad or through a machine.

If the water on the bodywork forms into small particles, it's mostly a sign of a well-cured paint job.

Effect time of nano coating?

Nano coatings usually take several weeks to fully cure. We recommend parking in the shade and away from the elements, if possible, during this time.

There are thousands of brands that sell nano-coated items to allow you to make a DIY project. There are hundreds of service centers that promise to do it for you. Either way, the claim is a million.

There’s no real way to know how long a coating will last once it’s been applied but most brands and service providers claim at least 10 years, or more often.

A word of caution though that the more affordable coatings may only last for a few months. There are also combination wax coating sprays available on e-commerce platforms that can boost shine for a fraction of the price but only last up to a few washes.

Nano coating cost?

The cost of nano coating for your vehicle depends on several factors.

A DIY kit can cost around 2,000 and more, with anything cheaper possibly being a shoddy product more often than not. This kit will be for single use only and be sure to check if the contents are enough to cover your entire vehicle.

Take it to a professional and you’re looking at bills of anywhere between 20,000 to 1 lakh, depending on the size of the vehicle, the expertise of the service station and the quality of the paint used.

Does your car need nano coating?

Short answer? Yes.

The answer is not too short? Dependent.

Obtaining a ceramic coating can be an expensive process and may not be suitable for all budgets. If you’re on a budget, it’s better to avoid it and instead, ensure regular cleaning and proper polishing maintenance. Drive well to avoid scratches and dents, have a covered car park if possible or better yet have a parking space.

But if your love for your car knows no bounds, investing in nano or ceramic coatings is not without question. Providing great protection to ensure your vehicle stays as shiny as new, most nano-coatings go a long way when you – and your neighbors – stare at the wheel yours with admiration.
