NEW DELHI: Leader of Congress Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused the BJP of making the elderly dependent by eliminating the elderly pension mechanism.
He assured that Parliament, if elected to power in Gujarat, would restore the old pension scheme, saying it was the right of government employees national strengthener.
“By abolishing the old pension, the BJP has made dependent elderly people incapable of self-reliance. Government workers strengthening the country have the right: Old pensions,” he said in a tweet in Hindi.

“We have restored the old pension in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh. Now the Congress government will come to Gujarat and will bring back the old pension,” Gandhi also said, using the hashtag #CongressDegiOldPension.
Gujarat Parliament Senior Leader Arjun Modhwadia on Monday said his party will implement the old pension scheme in Gujarat just like the Parliamentary governments have done in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan if the party is voted to power in council polls.
Thousands of retired government employees in Gujarat recently held protests demanding reintroduction old retirement.
The Gujarat council elections will take place over the next few months and Congress is looking to wrest power from the BJP in the state.
