Will Smith banned from accepting Oscars for 10 years

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences banned it Will Smith from the Oscars for the next 10 years his slap on Chris Rock during the broadcast of the 94th Annual Academy Awards on March 27.

Under penalty imposed by the Academy Board of Governors, Smith “will not be permitted to attend any Academy event or program, directly or substantially, including but not limited to the Academy Awards. ,” for 10 years, effective April 8, 2022.

In a statement, the board said it accepted Smith’s resign from the Academy on April 1 and commended Rock for “maintaining his composure under exceptional circumstances.”

“The action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s conduct is a step towards our larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests, and restoring confidence in the Academy,” the council said in a statement. “We also hope this can begin a time of healing and recovery for all involved and affected.”

The Academy statement also acknowledged that the organization itself “failed to adequately address the situation in the room.”

“For this, we regret it,” the academy said. “This was our chance to set an example for our Academy guests, viewers and family around the world, and we fell short – not preparing for the unprecedented.”

For his part, Smith in a statement last week called his actions “inexcusable” and added that he hopes his resignation from the Academy will “refocus back on those who deserve attention for their accomplishments and allow the Academy to back to the incredible work it has done to support creativity and artistry in film.” Smith also wrote a publicly apologize to Rock on Instagram.
