American Taylor Fritz dispelled any notion of the “Netflix curse” at the Australian Open on Tuesday, even as it claimed another famous victim. Nick Kyrgios, Paula Badosa and Ajla Tomljanovic have all pulled out of the Grand Slam due to injury – all three feature in the new Netflix documentary series “Break Point”. So did Italy’s 13th seed Matteo Berrettini, who briefly lost to British veteran Andy Murray in the first round in Melbourne on Tuesday.
But Fritz, who also starred in the series fly over the wall, beat Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili and subsequently dismissed any light talk on social media about an alleged curse.
“I noticed people pulling out of the league but I didn’t know it was something,” the 25-year-old said.
“I’m not going to lose the first game because I’m on the Netflix show, so I’m not thinking about that.”
Fritz beat Basilashvili 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 and faced Alexei Popyrin of Australia or Tseng Chun-hsin of Taiwan in the second round.
Ons Jabeur and Aryna Sabalenka also competed in “Break Point” — and also won on Tuesday.
