Windjammers 2 shows a great way to update Neo Geo classic

Over the past decade or so, I’ve had a consistent problem when reviewing classic Neo Geo games. It always starts with something interesting – typically the announcement that a game I loved growing up will be ported to a new console. And it almost always ends in disappointment, with my memory of the experience outperforming the game itself.

Before I get too deep into this, a few things should be noted. For one, this doesn’t apply to all Neo Geo games. A few – generally animation-heavy things, like Metal Slug . Series and Garou: Mark of the Wolves – very nice to hold. On the other hand, I still consider the large library of the system to be one of the greatest artistic achievements of the ’90s.

But when I went back to a fairly obvious part of the original Neo Geo lineup, I realized the spectacle was a big part of that moment. Now that we’re 20 – or in some cases 30 years from now, bringing big characters to the screen isn’t as impressive as it once was. So I’d love to see some of these games remade or see the sequels update their visuals in the direction that SNK has gone. King of Fighters 12 and 13, instead of its current 3D approach.

With Windjammers 2, the Dotemu developer is scratching an itch. Uses a sharp yet simple art style, similar to the style of games like Rage Street 4 and Wonder Boy: Dragon Trap, Windjammers 2 achieves an almost perfect balance of updates Wind jacket enough for it to look modern but still come out a lot like how I remember the 1994 original in my head. I suppose the characters and effects could use a bit more detail, but this is a great pattern I’d love to see applied to much of the original Neo Geo line.

It also helps with that while Windjammers 2 As a sequel, it hasn’t changed too much. The original game was a product of its time, cramming fighting game mechanics into a competitive game Pong, and that concept made it a cult following over the years. Windjammers 2 It feels like a respectable extension of that concept – it has some new characters and movements, though in some ways it’s more of a remake than a sequel. I suppose you could argue that expectations for a sequel aren’t as high as they were in the mid-’90s.

All of this works in Windjammers 2favored, because the result is a game that delivers the feel of the original game without some of the baggage of the mid-’90s. With any luck, hopefully we’ll see how it’s handled. same for other classic Neo Geo games.
